What is the inspection cycle for commercial extinguishers?
NFPA 10 requires annual maintenance services be performed on commercial fire extinguishers to ensure they are fully functional and ready for use in an emergency. A new tag and tamper seal are replaced annually on compliant extinguishers.
This service is done once per year, every 12 months.
How often should kitchen suppression systems be tested?
NFPA 17A and NFPA 96 require commercial kitchen fire suppression systems undergo semi-annual maintenance and component testing to verify the integrity of the piping and the proper operation of the control actuators. Fire detection fusible links, tamper seals and tags are replaced semi-annually, and an inspection summary report is sent to the client.

Are emergency lights required to be tested?
Yes, NFPA 101 states emergency and exit lighting must be tested monthly to ensure that the battery backup systems are charged and functioning properly. A 90-minute illumination test via backup battery is also required once per year. We provide code-compliant battery testing and bulb replacement services to ensure continuous operation in the event of a power failure.

What is the difference between a monthly inspection and annual maintenance?
An inspection is performed monthly and consists of quick checks of the extinguisher. This can be performed by a designated trained safety person. Maintenance is performed annually by a qualified fire protection service technician that has been tested on NFPA standards, and is licensed or permitted to certify extinguishers for insurance and fire code compliance.
What is the difference between a 6-year maintenance and hydro-testing?
A 6-year maintenance is an internal exam of the extinguisher cylinder and includes a rebuild of the discharge valve. Hydrostatic testing is a water-based pressure test to verify the structural integrity of the extinguisher cylinder, typically performed in intervals of 5 or 12 years depending on extinguisher type and also includes a 6-year maintenance.
